3809 Vela Shawl (e-pattern)

The Vela shawl is a fun piece, with it’s geometric design, and easy to wear shape. This pattern is a relaxing knit, with a stitch repeat that you will quickly memorise.
The side to side construction of this pattern means that this shawls size is easily customisable according to your needs and/or your yarn amounts.

Vela is a constellation, in the southern sky It is Latin for the sails of a ship, and this was the inspiration for this piece.
Yarn Requirements
-4 ply/fingering weight yarn, Colour 1 (C1) 340m/370yds, Colour 2 (C2) 340m/370yds. Amounts are approximate, and knitters have used from as little as 230m/250yds of each colour and made a good size shawl, to 380m/415yds of each colour to make a very large shawl.
-3.5mm needles (or size to give correct gauge/tension)
Finished Size:
186cm (74”) length x 40cm (16”) deep, after blocking. Size is approximate and is easily customisable.
Gauge/Tension:
25 sts x 40 rows per 10cm (4”) in Garter Stitch after blocking. While exact tension is not essential to the success of this project, if your tension is dramatically different your yarn requirements may also differ. The most important thing is that you are getting a knitted fabric that you like, so don't be afraid to go up or down a needle size to obtain this.
